Direct mail

Mailing house and direct mail services in Staten Island and NYC

We are a mailing house that prints and mails for businesses, nonprofits and organizations across the United States, from our base in Staten Island, NY. The list, the design, the printing and the postal prep are ours. Who gets it and what it says are yours. Not sure where to start? See four places to start a direct mail project.

What it is

Direct mail is a printed piece sent to chosen addresses

A postcard, letter or brochure goes to a list of addresses you picked. A mailing house, also called a lettershop, cleans that list, prints and assembles the piece, and gets it into the postal system correctly.

New to the terms? Our guide to how direct mail works defines each one.

Want to follow a mailing after it leaves our hands? Ask about our live tracking system, a dashboard for monitoring when mail reaches your customers' homes. We confirm tracking for each project. See mail tracking.

Before you start

What we need from you

  • Audience or list. Who should receive it, or the file you already have.
  • Artwork or design brief. Finished files, or a short description for our designers.
  • Quantity. How many pieces.
  • Piece size and format. Postcard, letter, self-mailer or brochure.
  • Target in-home date. The day you want it in mailboxes.

Missing one? Tell us your goal and date on the quote request form and we will help fill the gaps.

Direct mail printing and bulk mailing: inserting, sealing and labeling

Direct mail printing and bulk mailing go together: we print the pieces, then lettershop work turns the printed sheets into finished mail. We run both in-house. A bulk mailing sends many pieces at once, prepared so they can qualify for lower postage rates.

Need envelopes printed first? See stationery and NCR forms for letterhead and envelopes.

JMS Print & Mail is a union print shop. Our union label is number 549L from the Printing, Packaging and Production Workers Union of North America (PPPWU), Local 1L. We confirm the label for each job. See union printing.

What drives the cost of a direct mail campaign

  • Quantity: how many pieces
  • Piece size and paper: format, stock and finish
  • Print options: color, folding, die cutting
  • Postage class: the Postal Service's rate category
  • Data work: building, cleaning and merging lists
  • Inserting and assembly: machine or hand

Postage is set by the Postal Service, not by us. Rates depend on mail class, piece size and how the mail is prepared. Current rates are on the USPS website (opens in a new tab).

Direct mail questions

What do you need from me to start a mailing?

Start with who you want to reach, what you want them to do and when the mail should land. We settle the list, artwork and piece size with you. Attach files to the quote request form or call (347) 466-5873 (Mon–Fri, 9–5).

Can you design the mail piece for me?

Yes. Our design team starts from your goals and brand, so the piece fits your message. Or bring finished artwork and we will print it. Either way, tell us who the piece is for and we will settle the size and format with you. Brochures, flyers and other collateral are covered under printing and design.

How do I compare the cost of different mail pieces?

Two kinds of cost sit behind every mailing: making the pieces and delivering them. Quantity and piece size affect both. To compare approaches, ask for a postcard and a self-mailer quoted side by side. Presorting can qualify mail for lower postage rates too; see presorting and mailing.

Bring the audience and the date for your mailing

Tell us who it should reach and when it should land. We will reply with a quote and any questions. Phone hours: Mon–Fri, 9–5.
