What it means

What “union-printed” means

“Union-printed” means the work was produced by a union print shop.

The union label, often called the “union bug,” is the small mark printed on a finished piece. It tells the reader that the piece was produced by a union print shop. Whether the label goes on a given piece is something we confirm with you for each job, before anything is printed.

Who it is for

When a union label matters

Some buyers want the union label because of who they are or who they answer to. If you fit one of the groups below, say so when you ask for a quote.

Union locals and councils

Newsletters, notices, event flyers and mailings for members, with the union label confirmed job by job.

Campaigns

Candidate and issue committees that want union-printed mail and handouts. See Political mailing.

Organizations with a purchasing policy

Nonprofits, associations and companies whose policy is to choose union-printed materials when they can.

How to order

Ordering union-printed work

  • Say you need the union label. Write “union label” in the project details on the quote form, or say so when you call, so it is part of the job from the start.
  • Tell us the pieces. Mailers, postcards, flyers, brochures, stationery or something else, and how many of each.
  • Confirm how the label applies. We will confirm with you how the union label applies to each piece and where it goes, before anything is printed.
  • Add mailing if you need it. The same shop can prepare and mail the piece, so a union-printed mailing does not have to be split between vendors.

Not sure what your group requires? Ask the person who set your printing policy, then send us the details and we will work from there.

Check our listing. The PPPWU Find a Union Printer directory (opens in a new tab) lists union printer companies with current valid label licenses from the PPPWU or the Allied Printing Trades Council. Filter by PPPWU label 549L or Local 1L to see JMS Print and Mail LLC.

We use your quote request to confirm everything else: the pieces, quantities, artwork and your target date.

Union printing questions

What is a union bug?

A union bug is another name for the union label: the small mark printed on a finished piece to show it was made by a union print shop. We confirm with you, job by job, whether and where it goes on your piece.

How can I confirm your union label?

Open the PPPWU directory (opens in a new tab) and filter by label 549L or Local 1L. Our listing there reads JMS Print and Mail LLC. You can also call (347) 466-5873 (Mon–Fri, 9–5).

Can union-printed work be mailed too?

Yes. The shop that does your union printing can also prepare and mail the piece: we handle mailing lists, presorting and mailing. Tell us about the mailing when you ask for a quote, including how many pieces go out, who they are for and the date you want them to land. We will plan the print run and the mailing together.
