Presorting & mailing

Presort mail services in Staten Island

Presorting puts your mailing in the order the United States Postal Service (USPS) wants, so it can qualify for lower postage. At JMS Print & Mail, we validate your addresses, sort and prepare the pieces, and deliver them to USPS.

Presort in brief

What presort mail services are

Presorting means putting your mail in order before it reaches the Postal Service. Pieces are grouped by destination and placed in trays, which leaves the Postal Service less sorting to do. Mail that arrives sorted and prepared to its standards can qualify for lower postage rates.

The address decides which tray a piece goes in, so we validate every address first.

Postage rates and preparation rules are set by the Postal Service, not by us. We prepare your mailing for them, and the current rules are on usps.com (opens in a new tab).

Unsorted
Pieces reach the Postal Service in no set order, and it does the sorting.
Presorted

The difference
The sorting is already done, so the mailing can qualify for a lower postage rate.

Presort on its own, or commingle with other mail

Presort

Your mailing is sorted and trayed on its own, then delivered to USPS.

Before you send a job

What to send us for a presort job

  • A mailing list, or a description of who you want to reach. No list yet? See our mailing list services.
  • The piece itself: a print-ready PDF, or a design brief if you want us to design it. See Printing & design.
  • Quantity, piece size and format: letter, postcard, flat or self-mailer.
  • Anything that goes inside the envelope, and how to assemble it.
  • Your target in-home date: the day you want the mail in mailboxes.

Small mailing? Give us your quantity and we will tell you how the Postal Service's presort requirements apply to it.

Presort mail questions

How does presorting affect postage?

There is no single figure. Mail that arrives sorted and prepared to Postal Service standards can qualify for lower rates, and what applies to you depends on your piece type, mail class, quantity and address quality. We talk through how the rates apply when we quote.

Do you handle inserting and labeling?

Yes. We label pieces and assemble them by machine insertion or hand assembly, including inserting and sealing, then sort, tray and deliver the mailing to USPS. Tell us how the piece should go together and we will confirm the method. For the wider picture, see our direct mail services.

How much lead time should I allow?

Lead time depends on your artwork, quantity, list work and finishing, so we do not quote a standard number. Give us your target in-home date on the quote request form and we will confirm whether the schedule works. For list work, see data management.

Which mail classes can you presort?

Our presort options cover First-Class, Standard and Nonprofit mail. Which class fits depends on what you are mailing and to whom, and the Postal Service decides what qualifies. Describe the piece and the audience on the quote request form, and we will suggest the class that fits.

Describe the mailing you want presorted

Tell us what you are mailing, how many pieces and when it should land, and we will send a quote. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
